9.11.2012 Residential dampness and mold problems result in a 50% increase in asthma riskResidential dampness and mold problems result in a 50% increase in asthma risk, concludes an international research team based at the Center for Environmental and Respiratory Health Research, University of Oulu. Their estimate is based on a systematic review and quantitative analysis of the existing scientific evidence. The effect is estimated to be stronger among infants and toddlers, approximately 100% increase, but also adult population is at risk. The research team reviewed systematically all the available research reports and conducted a meta-analysis on the role of dampness and mold problems in the etiology of asthma. The high quality studies included in the synthesis were conducted in the Nordic Countries, United States and Taiwan. Adverse effects were observed in all the studied climatic condition underlining the global perspective of the dampness-related problems. This research is part of a collaborative work between the University of Oulu, Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Institute of Health and Wellbeing which is funded by the Academy of Finland SALVE Research Program. The aim of this collaborative project is to predict future scenarios of the effects of climate change on public health through air quality and housing conditions. |
