Research interests

I specialise in physical anthropology, osteology and palaeopathology. At present, I’m working on my doctoral thesis, which aims to offer more information on the life of Nikolaus Rungius, a vicar in Keminmaa in the early 17th century, with the help of radiology and stable isotope analyses, for example.

Vicar Rungius was buried under the floor of his church in the manner popular from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The conditions in a church tomb favour the cold drying of soft tissue, which is why many of the bodies buried in the church – including that of vicar Rungius – became mummified. The mummy of Rungius has been the source of several local stories over the centuries, but the vicar himself was rarely mentioned by his contemporaries. New nondestructive methods offer the opportunity to obtain plenty of more information about his life.

I’m especially interested in studying Rungius’s diet, his anthropometric properties and particularly his state of health immediately preceding his death. I also plan to study the mummification process at a more general level. I’m also interested in the significance of the Rungius mummy to the parish at Keminmaa and the local residents, as well as its status of an unofficial relic. All those willing were able to visit the famous mummy for centuries.

The research started in the spring of 2011 with a CT study of the mummy of Nikolaus Rungius. It revealed the anthropometric properties of the late vicar, preservation of the mummy and some pathological states, shedding some light on the life and health of the vicar and saving the mummy’s physical properties in digital format.
