The research projects at the Department of Architecture are included in the University of Oulu research focus areas of Cultural Identity and Interaction and Environment, Natural Resources and Materials. 

The lighting workshop at the silo building in Meri-Toppila (above photo) was arranged in November 2009 by Department of Architecture and iGuzzini Finland. The workshop was part of Architectural lighting course and it was led by Henrika Pihlajaniemi, Aulikki Herneoja, Heikki Riitahuhta, Antti Hongisto and Sakari Nurkki. In the workshop participated 23 master level students from Oulu and abroad. The lighting installations in the silo were used as part of an adventure route for children and youth in a happening for activation and participation of neighborhood inhabitants of the Meri-Toppila suburb.
