The history of the Centre for Arctic Medicine begins in 1969, when the Nordic Council of Ministers founded the Nordic Secretariat for Arctic Medicine in Oulu.
The Secretariat was attached to the University of Oulu in 1995 and the name was changed to the Institute for Arctic Medicine.
In the beginning of 2001 the name of the institute was changed to the Centre for Arctic Medicine. It was also attached to the Thule Institute, the Oulu University unit co-ordinating the focus area of Northern and Environmental Issues.
