The Department of Biology was founded in 1995, when the former Departments of Zoology and Botany (founded in 1959) and Genetics (founded in 1970) were united as part of the reorganization process of the Faculty of Science at the University of Oulu.
The Department of Biology is located at the Linnanmaa Campus together with the supporting units, the Museum of Zoology, the Experimental Zoo, the Botanical Gardens and Museum, Bothnian Bay Research Station, and the Biological Library.
