Job search

In order to be succesful in job search in Finland you have to be very active. It is estimated that only about 20-30 % of open vacancies are announced openly, i.e. are published in newspapers, websites, etc.

When you start looking for a job, you should start by defining your skills, competencies and interests. Where do you want to work and what kind of goals do you have for the future? What kind of positions or employers would meet your interests? When you have a clear picture of your goals, you should start looking for potential employers and start the actual job search process.

It is important to remember that Finnish language skills are usually expected even if the working language is not Finnish. Having adequate skills in Finnish will help you in the Finnish working life.

Part time work can best be found in the field of services working as shop assistants, sales assistants, in fast food services, etc. Please note that these jobs require excellent skills in Finnish.

Direct contacts and personal networks

Active networking with your fellow students, teachers, professors and friends is often the best way to map out your possibilites for finding a job in Oulu.

Job applications: Cover letter & CV

Always follow the instructions given by the employer on how to apply. If there are no requests for testimonials or certificates, you should only send two documents, your cover letter and a CV.

In your cover letter, the focus should be on your motivation and on the strengths and skills you think you have for the position. Show the employer how they would benefit from your skills and contribution.

Your CV includes information about your education, your job history, your achievements and skills. You should name your formal educational qualifications and briefly include all you previous work experience and positions.
