ECM regulates vasculature through both mechanical support and cell signalling. Sprouting angiogenesis often occurs in a provisional ECM (e.g. fibronectin, FN; fibrin; ColI) that differs from the vascular BM (e.g. laminins, ColIV, XV, XVIII) of quiescent ECs.
