The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is responsible for Bachelor, Master and PhD level education in computer science and engineering at the University of Oulu, Finland.

During the past decades, computer science and engineering has had a significant impact into our daily lives. The development continues and soon computers will not be used as separate devices anymore but will instead blend into our living environments and offer us rich sets of services through natural and intuitive user interfaces. Graduates from computer science and engineering will play a key role in this development.

Did you know that our Computer Science and Engineering graduates work in various tasks, not just as software designers? You might develop new computational methods, or build novel software or large networked systems. In addition to design tasks, you might lead a large development project, work in marketing, or run your own business, for example.

Looking for a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering?

Our Department offers many ways to achieve highly desired University degrees in our study programmes.

We have two international 2-year Master degree programmes: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Biomedical Engineering (BME).

These topics have been selected on the basis of high international level research of our Department. CSE programme is taught by professors of our Department in order to provide focused study contents. BME programme is given by related professors in three faculties of the University of Oulu which makes it a highly multi-disciplinary programme.

In both programmes, the teaching language is English in all courses.

How about exchange studies?

We are actively aiming at international studies in our department. Currently majority of the Bachelor and Master level materials and readings are available in English. Many Master level courses are being taught in English, and more are being translated into English.

We offer a five-year combined Bachelor's and Master's degree Programme in Computer Science and Engineering. This degree programme provides a strong basis in applied mathematics and extensive knowledge and skills in software and computer engineering and science. Please notice, that the Bachelor´s degree is only available in Finnish.

In addition, flexible study paths exist for Bachelors within the University of Oulu to graduate as Master in computer science and engineering.

Interested in joining the staff?

For students already in the end of their Bachelor or Master studies we offer traineeships and Master thesis assignments. Your background can be in engineering, computer science, natural sciences or mathematical sciences, and occasionally in even in other fields.

The research in computer science and engineering at the University of Oulu has been acknowledged of its internationally high quality. You can pursue for a PhD degree after the Master´s degree, and work as a researcher in one of our research groups.
