Researchers at the University of Oulu are active in over 70 different fields of study. In basic research, for example, they seek to deepen our understanding of the functioning of organic and inorganic matter, of the structure of the universe and of humans, culture and technology. Harnessed to the service of applied research and development, this knowledge results in the creation of inventions and innovations that benefit society.

The University of Oulu has placed itself firmly at the vanguard of scientific progress and application in its focus and development areas. Most of this research is cross-disciplinary in nature.

The main goal of the UniOGS is to provide the framework and conditions for high-quality, research-driven doctoral education for all students of the University of Oulu. By promoting the development of effective student-supervisor relationships, founded on both motivation and commitment, UniOGS aims to create a favourable environment for the planning, execution and timely completion of doctoral training programmes tailored to each student. In UniOGS, students acquire a proficiency to work at doctoral level tasks.
