Studies at University of Oulu

The University of Oulu offers study opportunities with a solid academic foundation ranging from 5-6 year degree programmes and master’s programmes to doctoral training. There are also several possibilities such as open university studies, executive training and continuing education for developing and maintaining skills and competencies.

In addition to a variety of student exchange programmes, international master’s degree programmes in English are offered in six fields of study, making the university an international study environment.

5-6 Year Degree Programmes

MSc in Statistics

Profile of the Degree: 

In this line, students familiarize themself with mathematical models containing variation and random variables. Models of this type are used in many areas of science and technology. The theory of statistics forms a basis for  modelling complicated phenomenas and making conclusions  and estimations from the data obtained. This line gives ability to become an expert in statistics in the industrial and economic life, research institutes and universities. Students in this area of expertise have found their working places, for instance, from research institutes, universities and different enterprises with wide domain. In particular, technology, medical sciences, economics, agriculture and forestry are areas that need constantly statistical expertise and knowledge.

Courses Required for the Degree: 

The degree programme (120 ECTS credits) is comprised of compulsory advanced studies in mathematics (80 ECTS credits) together with optional minor and major studies. The degree structure is decsribed in the course structure diagram.

Learning Outcomes: 

Upon completing a Master's degree, the graduate can



  • describe the central concepts and theoretical principles of statistics both orally and in writing

  • apply in a skilled manner methods of statistical description, modelling and inference in the analysis of empirical data

  • use the necessary software tools for statistical computation and graphics

  • design, conduct, and report more demanding statistical investigations than small-scale studies

  • interpret results and reporting of statistical investigations with appropriate criticism

  • work as a statistical expert in multiprofessional work communities.
Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning: 

The main principle for the recognition of prior learning in the degree programme is recognizing official learning. Courses of the degree programme can be substituted by prior courses of the same level and approximately the same contents. The student must deliver a document and a course description of any previously completed course to the department.


The recognition of prior learning follows the main principles as defined by the University of Oulu.

Modes of Study: 

A M.Sc. degree (120 ECTS credits) can be completed in two years by full-time study. The lectures, exercise sessions, computer practicals, and seminars are organized on weekdays within the University building. The teaching mostly takes place at the University with attendant home exercises and/or home exams. The studies naturally include a substantial amount of independent work.

Language of Instruction: 

The programme can be completed in Finnish or English. Almost all advanced courses are given in English if there are international students.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading: 

The student completes the required major subject studies and the optional studies according to the curriculum. The courses are mainly completed by taking an exam or submitting solved exercises, and they are assessed by the person in charge of the course.


The assessment is often based on the grades of the end or final exams. The details on the completion of the courses can be found in the description of each course in WebOodi. The courses are graded either by a numerical scale ranging from 0 to 5 or by the grades pass/fail. The grading system in use is notified in the course description. The grade in each study module is calculated as the credit-weighted average of the course grades.


To complete the M.Sc. degree, a master’s thesis must be written either in Finnish or in English. The thesis is graded separately in the diploma. The grade awarded to the thesis is not taken into account when calculating the grade in the major subject.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates: 

Master's level training in statistics is an excellent starting point for many careers. Graduates of the department work as teachers and researches, as well as experts in research institutes, industry, information technology, finance and insurance, biosciences and medicine.

Access to Further Studies: 

A graduate with sufficiently good grades can apply for a place in a doctoral programme. At the University of Oulu doctoral studies are coordinated by the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS).

Graduation Requirements: 

The M.Sc. degree consists of major subject studies and other studies (total 90 ECTS) plus thesis as per the curriculum. A master’s thesis of 30 ECTS credits is required to complete the degree. The student must write a summary of the thesis, which also serves as the maturity examination for the M.Sc. degree. The degree is granted on application.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations: 

All education in the University of Oulu is based on the principles of the joint European credit transfer system (ECTS) which facilitates the transparency of education and the recognition of degrees at an international level. All degrees awarded from the University of Oulu are recognised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.


The M.Sc. degree is a qualification for doctoral studies as well a general qualification for many jobs in the civil service. The degree provides language proficiency required of personnel in public bodies in Finland, in accordance with the Language Proficiency Section 6:


Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004, Language Proficiency Section 6: Language proficiency


1. The student must demonstrate in studies included in education for a lower or higher University degree or otherwise that he/she has attained:


(1) proficiency in Finnish and Swedish which is required of civil servants in bilingual public agencies and organizations under Section 6(1) of the Act on the Knowledge of Languages Required of Personnel in Public Bodies (424/2003) and which is necessary for their field; and


(2) skills in at least one foreign language needed to follow developments in the field and to operate in an international environment.


2. The provisions of subsection 1 do not concern a student who has been educated in a language other than Finnish or Swedish or a student who has been educated abroad. The language proficiency of such students shall be determined by the university.


3. For special reasons, the university may either totally or partially exempt a student from the requisite language skills referred to in subsection 1.
