Exam taken during a course (lecture exam)

Exams taken while a course is in progress and held during the teaching sessions set for the course are referred as lecture exams.

Lecture exam

A lecture exam is the primary and recommendable way to assess learning of part of the teaching.

Usually students do not need to register separately for a lecture exam. The teacher may nevertheless choose to require prior registration. The teacher informs the students of the dates for the lecture exams and any registration procedures involved by the start of the course at the latest.

At the University of Oulu the assessment of study attainments is developed to become more authentic and ongoing in its approach. Various assessment methods may be used in addition to or in place of the exam held at the end of a standard course: these include e.g. home exams, essays, portfolios, practice tasks, mathematical exercises, problem-solving tasks, design tasks or project work.
