Centre for Health and Technology (CHT)

CHT is looking for new projects and partners.
The Centre for Health and Technology (CHT) is a regional research and business-driven Innovation centre, which associates universities, research centers, enterprises and regional authorities. Our main interest is the development of next generation social and healthcare technologies, processes and services in close co-operation with companies.
CHT represents 6 stakeholders in the region, all of whom have signed a co-operation agreement. The founding partners have committed to focus their operations, education, research and development activities on agreed innovation areas. The partners are: the City of Oulu (BusinessOulu and social and health services), University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), Technopolis Plc, and Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District.
The mission of CHT is to contribute to the development of Oulu as a dynamic innovation environment for health and wellness.
The CHT innovation centre brings together providers and users of healthcare technology and know-how, and enables the creation of systemic innovations.
CHT’s role is to combine the best ideas, people and resources from different fields of industries and science for the co-creation of next-generation health technologies, appliances and services.
The aim is to attract funding through the development of a strong research, development and innovation (RDI) project portfolio based on thematic issues and research programs. CHT is developing a dynamic innovation process for multi-disciplinary research and development, establishing strategic cooperations with global networks, and developing infrastructure for piloting.
CHT projects are multi-disciplinary, with the main focus on technology, but with close links to application development, usability and social sciences. Focus areas of CHT are wireless health monitoring, individualized healthcare, and genes and lifestyle.
CHT plays an active role in Oulu Innovation Alliance, which forms the basis of Oulu’s innovation centre concept. The Oulu Innovation Alliance is building an innovative and competitive operating environment for R&D and education, and for the development of related business, service and marketing competences. In addition, Oulu Innovation Alliance aims to develop and test innovation systems and processes in order to accelerate the creation of new business, and build international collaboration networks for players in the Oulu region.
Five innovation centers have been established in the City of Oulu. These include the Center of Internet Excellence (3 D Internet, Living labs), Printocent (printed electronics and optical measurements), Maigbe (Global business development), the Centre for Environment and Energy, and the Centre for Health and Technology (CHT).

Maritta Perälä-Heape
CHT director, Dr. Maritta Perälä-Heape, has a versatile professional expertise.
Prior to this appointment, Maritta Perälä-Heape worked for the Finnish funding agency for innovation and technology, Tekes. As the director of a regional unit in Oulu, she was responsible for regional innovation development activities. In addition, she worked as a technology program manager and as a senior biotechnology/life science advisor. Before her employment in Tekes, she was a R&D and business development manager in a Finnish-based, american biotechnology company, Fibrogen Europe Ltd. She has over ten years of experience in science. Dr. Maritta Perälä-Heape received her PhD in clinical biochemistry from the University of Oulu, Finland. Her Ph.D. thesis was done in collaboration with a Finnish pharmaceutical company, Orion Corporation Farmos Ltd.
