FiDiPro project to strengthen the machine vision research at the University of Oulu

The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation Tekes has granted a new international research project to the University of Oulu within its FiDiPro – the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme.

FiDiPro Professor Xilin Chen from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) will begin his visit to Oulu in August 2012. He will be hosted by Professor Matti Pietikäinen from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).

The “Perceptual interfaces for intelligent human-computer interaction” project will combine the expertise of the leading computer vision research groups in Finland and China.

Its aim is to investigate novel computer vision based perceptual methods and technology needed for building advanced systems for human-computer interaction (HCI). The technologies include awareness of user’s identification, status and intention. Different kind of visual information will be combined with depth information received by e.g. the Kinect camera to improve the user experience.

The FiDiPro project is expected to provide novel scientific results and technologies, which create basis for innovative applications in industry.
