TUTLI-funding

Tekes has renewed its funding in 2012. One funding type, preparing the commercialization of research outcomes (TUTLI), is closely related to commercialization of research results handled by Innovation Services in our university.

In this funding type it is important to allocate at least 30 % of total resources to the preparation of commercialization. Funding from companies is not needed. However, commercialization knowhow must be included in the project resources and in its advisory board.

It is a Tekes requirement that funding applications are prepared together with University Innovation Services; other project proposals will be rejected. Preparation does not mean that the Innovation Services are only informed about the project. It means that the project proposal is worked up together with the Innovation Services.

TUTLI-funding aims to generate new research-based business. However, a good business idea is not born in a minute but it needs several iterations. For this reason the project preparation needs to be started well in advance.

Please contact Innovation Services if you think that your project proposal could fit to the TUTLI-funding.

The proporal is worked up with Innovation Services in the following way:

  • the proposal is presented to Innovation Services, preparation of elevator pitch, planning of commercialization part of the project, IP-rights of results
  • the proposal is presented to the advisory board (business angels and experienced business persons)
  • the proposal is presented to advisors of Tekes
  • writing project plan and making the application

You can get more information from Innovation Services.

Elevator pitch means a short (1-10 min) oral presentation which aims to attract the audience to become interested in your proposal. With the pitch you try to sell your proposal to the audience. You can utilize

With it you can make a power point-presentation which you can use to present your idea to Innovation Services, collaborators and Tekes. It is important to tell clearly: what is the problem which you are solving, you will buy your solution (who is the customer), what kind of benefit your customer will get and what are the competive solutions. You can look at hints here how to make an elevator pitch. Obs! You can also get personal advices to build attractive talk! Ask more from Innovation Services.

When you start to write a project plan you can use:

The TUTLI-funding can be applied two times per year: in February and September (preminary deadline 13.9.2013). In this funding type there are not themes so applications can come from all fields of science.

Obs! When this funding type is so different from other research funding types you cannot make a good proposal in a short time. That´s why it is good that you contact Innovation Services well in advance (= several months before deadline).
