The University students study abroad through major exchange programmes. The University's own bi-lateral partnerships world-wide make international study abroad and exchange periods an integral part of study programmes. Hundreds of foreign exchange students and researchers are a part of the University's international scientific community.

Campuses

The main campus is located in Linnanmaa, about 5 km away from city-centre. The area is located next to one of the largest lakes in the city area. Around 17,000 students in six faculties study at the University. In Linnanmaa, you can find the faculties for humanities, education, sciences and technology, as well as the Oulu Business School.

In addition to the Linnanmaa campus, there are three other campuses around the city and region. The Faculty for Medicine is next to the Oulu University Hospital in Kontinkangas. The Department of Architecture has its own historic, mini-campus in city-centre by Market Square. The third campus is in Kajaani, where the university’s Kajaani University Consortium is situated.

Studies begin in small group

All new students receive small-group guidance in the beginning. Guidance begins from the first day of university and is at its most intensive during the first autumn.

With the help of a student tutor or small-group advisor, and ”kummi-student” in the case of exchange students, groups of about ten each receive information about the student community and university. Students get to learn about their study programmes, study fields, their faculties and departments, and general university practices. They also get to know the campus environments, Oulu, and their fellow students.

It is important for students who come from far away in and out of Finland to be able to make themselves at home, make new friends and settle into life at the university and in Oulu.

Personal Study Advisors

Every degree programme at theUniversity of Oulu has at least one Personal Study Advisor (PSA).

The PSA helps the students to plan their Personal Study Plans (PSP) and to evaluate their study progress. The PSA helps the students to familiarize themselves with their field of study, career opportunities and important information concerning employment in the respective sector.

Students can meet their PSA either individually or in small groups.
