A two-year MSc degree in protein science and biotechnology aimed at international students consists of the following elements:

This MSc degree programme was established to meet the clear needs of academia and industry in the post genomic era. This programme is specifically aimed at giving students in-depth understanding of the structure-function relationship of proteins and the techniques used to produce and characterize them and is built around the international level research undertaken in this field in the faculty.

Students who are selected for the degree will undertake 120 study points (equivalent of two years) of studies. These studies are designed to maximise hands on individual training in modern state of the art techniques and methodologies while providing a solid groundwork in theoretical aspects of the field. Around half of the degree involves integration of students into different research groups, both three month placements in research groups and finally cumulating in a 6 month research project.

The degree is highly flexible, even within the obligatory courses, with more than three-quarters of the degree involving student choice. Hence it allows students to specialize in the aspects of protein science and biotechnology which will most benefit their future career. The programme is particularly aimed at people going into research and former students have been very successful in finding PhD positions in Finland and abroad.

The degree programme includes, but is not limited to, studies in molecular biology, protein chemistry, biocomputing, bioinformatics, protein folding, systems biology, structural studies by x-ray crystallography and NMR, courses on other advanced methodologies (see below), mini-projects and the final research project. All projects are carried out in active well-funded research groups.

As an example of one course in the degree programme:

Biochemical methodologies II: This course comprises of 11 hours of lectures, 8 hours of exercises and 3 weeks of practical work. Students will work on an individual basis to characterise a unique mutant of a protein they have previously made (molecular biology II) and purified (protein chemistry II). The characterization will include circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy, sub-second kinetics by stopped-flow and quenched-flow, mass spectrometric analysis by ES-MS and MALDI-tof, basic proteomics, microcalorimetry and surface plasmon resonance. The course write up requires a cross-comparison between results obtained on different mutants.

Education leading to a Master's degree in Protein Science and Biotechnology provides the student with:

  • apply scientific knowledge and methods to topical tasks and to undertake scientific research with supervision;
  • analyze information and data and their setting within a theoretical network accompanied by critical analysis and assessment;
  • integrate the subject area as a coherent whole;
  • communicate with good language skills for national and international tasks;
  • demonstrate transferable and cognitive skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and critically about science using a variety of approaches;
  • apply further knowledge, including the abilities to conceive, design and implement independent research and demonstrate capability for scientific postgraduate work.

Consistent with our goal to provide the highest-level of education and research through the systematic recruitment of experts from Finland and aboard all of the teaching on our MSc study programmes is in English.

Studies are organized such that students can complete the degree within two years of full-time study. Obligatory course units are organized at the beginning of studies and are common to all students. Students are encouraged to undertake a period of time abroad during the MSc, especially during the MSc thesis work.

After completion of master's thesis student has to write a maturity test based on the thesis, if it has not been written earlier in Bachelor's degree either in Finnish or English. If maturity test has been written in earlier studies, the abstract of the Master's thesis can be accepted as a maturity test.

This MSc differs from the one aimed at our former BSc students only during the first two months.
