Welcome to English Philology

With a current staff of more than 25, the Department of English offers a wide selection of courses with emphasis on the communicative and social use of language. The focus of teaching and research is on the present-day English language which is approached from a variety of angles such as linguistics, applied linguistics, literature and culture. Nearly 400 applicants sit the entrance exam every summer, of which the annual intake of students majoring in English is 38. This makes us the largest department within the Faculty of Humanities and in fact one of the largest in Finland.

 

 

The Department of English will organize a joint conference between the Nordic Association for English Studies (NAES) and the Finnish Society for the Study of English (FINSSE). The conference NAES-FINSSE 2010: English in the North will be held 9-13 June 2010 at the University of Oulu.
