No More Departments

As of January 1st, 2008, all departments within the Faculty of Humanities, including the Department of English, ceased to exist. The change will be reflected on all official documents and on these web pages.

English Department Graduates Survey

The department has conducted a survey to find out how the former students of the Department of English have been employed after graduating from the University. Preliminary results show that the vast majority (more than 70 percent) of the respondents are employed in a permanent full-time position, whereas less than two percent are unemployed. More than 60 percent are employed in teaching jobs. 66 percent of the respondents felt that their current job corresponds well to their university education; additional 30 percent felt that their jobs correspond at least partially to their education. Approximately 60 percent of the respondents live and work in the Oulu region.

The figures are based on the responses of a total of 120 people who graduated from the university between 1990 and 2006 with English Philology as their major subject.

Additional results to follow at a later date.

Compiling Study Units (Opintokokonaisuuksien koostaminen)

It is highly recommended that all students who have completed their Basic and/or Intermediate Studies according to the old requirements have their study units compiled during the spring of 2008 unless they have already done so. This can be done in the English Philology Student Affairs Office (HU269). At this point, a final grade will be entered into the university computer system which means that you cannot improve the course grades or make any other changes once the units have been compiled. Compiling study units according to the old requirements will not be possible after the end of the spring term.

Changes in staff

We thank Mark Smith for the time he spent with us and wish him the best of luck with his future undertakings.

We welcome John Braidwood, who joined the teaching staff in August. Here's what John had to say about himself:

I thank the goodness and the grace

Which on my birth have smiled

And made me in these Christian days

A happy English child.

Much of this once well-known Victorian children's rhyme is no longer unquestionably accepted. England and the (dis)United Kingdom are very different places nowadays. Devolution has officially (re)opened the doors to Scottish, Welsh and Irish nationalisms, revealing rich seams of cultural diversity. I have worked in these areas of cultural inquiry for the last nineteen years at universities in Slovakia and Hungary , both for the British Council and the Irish government, and have also taught in Russia and England. I am delighted to have this opportunity to work in Oulu .
