Important information for a new student: about user account and email!

Activation of the student's user account and e-mail

The student account is your key to use systems and services of the University. By activating or receiving the user account, you accept to observe the Rules of IT Service Use.

There are own instructions for each group on this page: New students | Old students | Exchange students | International Master's degree programme students. In the instructions the numbered phases which are in the lower part of this page are referred to.

New students:

The system creates the new student's user account after you have first confirmed your study place and registered to the University. Your user account is created at the earliest on August 1st and it will be ready to use only when you activate it, in other words set a password for your account. You can set a password handily online (phase 2) if you have got a Finnish social security number and a personal Finnish online banking account

  • If you have studied earlier in the University of Oulu (also at the Open University), you can use your former user account. If you are not sure what your account is or have forgotten the password, activate your user account according to phase 2.
  • The user account will temporarily be closed if you register as absent. However, the account will not be closed if the reason for the absence is studying abroad, maternity leave or conscription.

When you know your user account and the password, you can activate into your use the Office 365 Education -service offered by the University. It contains, among others, the e-mail service.

As a new student please follow all the phases 1 - 4 of advices above. Go to phase 1: ACT IN THIS ORDER

Old students:

After registration, you do not need to activate your user account except in case you have forgotten the user name or the password, or the account has been locked. In these cases you can check your user name and can set a new password in the self-service Password, read more about Self-services and authentication.

Exchange students:

Student account for exchange students will be activated automatically approximately two weeks before the start of the exchange period provided that

  • Exchange application has been confirmed
  • Enrolment and registration form has been returned.

You will receive the user account information through e-mail. The password will be sent to you as a SMS, or you will set it yourself:

  • If you have got the Finnish Personal Identity Code and a personal Finnish online banking account, then set your password in the Password service according to phase 2 of advices above.
  • If you do not have the Finnish Personal Identity Code, but your mobile number is in the University's systems, you will get your password as a SMS. You can also visit IT Helpdesk and set your password using the self-service terminal.

N.B. All international students must obtain a real Finnish Personal Identity Code from the Local Register Office and inform it to Faculty Study Affairs as soon as possible. Information on how to obtain the code is available at www.maistraatti.fi or at Orientation website.

After that, please follow only the phases 3 - 4 of advices above. Go to the phase 3: ACT IN THIS ORDER

International Master's degree programme students:

New International Master’s degree programme students will receive their student account information after having arrived in Oulu and paid the student union fee.

  • Students attending the orientation: pay the student union fee first.
  • Students arriving outside the orientation: you must present the student union fee payment receipt at Faculty Study Affairs.

After payment, you will receive the user account information through e-mail. You have to set the password yourself:

  • If you have got the Finnish Personal Identity Code and a personal Finnish online banking account, then set your password in self-service Password according to phase 2 of advices above.
  • If you do not have the Finnish social security code, please visit IT Helpdesk and set your password using the self-service terminal.

ACT IN THIS ORDER:

1. Register to the University

The new student's user account is automatically created only when you have registered to the University and have paid the Student Union membership fee.

2. Activate your user account in August

If you do not know your user account and the password, visit the web service where you can authenticate only with with your Finnish Personal Identity Code and a personal Finnish online banking account of some of these banks:

This activation of the user account will be possible August 1st since.

During the online activation procedure:

  • If you get the message that your account has not been created, try again after 2 - 3 days
  • The system will show your student account; please write it down
  • Set your password by following tips for a strong password

If you can not activate your account online, then come to visit IT Helpdesk to receive your student account and password. Please, prepare yourself for queueing!

3. Activate O365 Service

When you have your student account and a password, use them to activate the Office 365 Education service. The email service is one part of the O365 services which contain Office Web Apps applications and right to install Office software into your own devices. All these services are free for the students.

The use of the e-mail of the O365 service is recommended, among others, for the following reasons:
• In the O365 service your e-mail address has ending oulu.fi, which makes the printing possible from your mobile devices to the printers of the University
• Furthermore, the O365 e-mail functions without problems with other systems of the studying used in the University of Oulu. There have been some difficulties to get all the messages in other e-mail services especially when the message arrives from the studying systems.

4. Verify your information in WebOodi

Please, verify and update your own personal data and your contact information in the WebOodi system. At the same time choose which of the third parties will get your information from WebOodi.
