Modern methods and resources of laser polarimetric diagnostics of biological tissues

Infotech Oulu Doctoral Program   Lecturer: Associate Professor Yuriy Ushenko, Chernivtsi National University, Chernivtsi, Ukraine Date & time: April 18, 2016 (Monday), 9-14April 19, 2016 (Tuesday), 9-14 Room: TS267 (Tietotalo 1) This course aims at the introduction to the basics of interaction of polarized laser radiation with optically anisotropic biological tissues and polycrystalline films of biological fluids. Original model of biological layer as a set of optically isotropic and polycrystalline components will be considered. This will allow us to analyze the optical manifestations of both phase (linear and circular birefringence) and amplitude (linear and circular dichroism) anisotropies of networks of biological crystals. To achieve this objective the basic vector-parametric and Muller-matrix methods describing the formation of polarization-inhomogeneous images of biological layers will be considered. Original component of this approach is to use for the diagnosis of the structure of biological layers of the set of azimuthally independent Mueller matrix elements and their combinations, namely Mueller-matrix invariants (MMI). For objectification of the obtained data the fundamental of statistical, correlation and fractal analyses of MMI coordinate distributions will be utilized. The major physical relationship between the MMI and the parameters of the phase and amplitude anisotropies will be characterized grounding on this basis. The obtained data form the basis of laser polarimetric diagnosis of pathological changes (benign and malignant - "precancer - cancer") of biological tissues of human different organs. As a separate direction the physical principles and practical use of laser-induced autofluorescence polarimetry of histological sections of biological tissues and polycrystalline films of biological fluids in various fields of medicine will be considered. On the basis of the principles of probative medicine a comparative analysis of the diagnostic efficiencies of the methods of biomedical diagnostics (optical coherence tomography (OCT), polarization-sensitive OCT, spectral fluorimetry, and others.) will be performed.
