Users must be able to remotely access and utilise University network services or externalised University services located outside the University network.
In remote access, connecting to the University network from the user’s terminal will take place across insecure public networks, i.e., the Internet and data/telephone networks linked to it, a public WLAN, or the local area network of some other organisation. Remote connections are insecure because the University cannot know the level of security of the user’s environment, connection or terminal in question.
In order to enable secure remote access, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) hub has been constructed to the computer network of the University of Oulu, and its purpose is to verify the level of security of the terminal used and encrypt the data traffic between the terminal and the University (image)
With the VPN remote access service the users can access remotely e.g. the University intranet and their home directories on the disk servers. With this service, it is also possible to access external web services that can normally only be used with the workplace terminal.
Accessing certain services remotely requires signing a strong user authentication agreement. This is required for the remote accessing of e.g. one’s own terminal and University Administration services.
In this service, the services that can be accessed remotely have been defined user or user group-specifically, so by default it is not possible to access e.g. the services of one’s home department. Access requires registering to the service.
You can log in to the service at the URL https://sa.oulu.fi
