SpamAssassin

The university mail servers paju.oulu.fi and koivu.oulu.fi have the built-in capability to filter spam with SpamAssassin or Bayes Filter. SpamAssassin is not 100% accurate but it can help to dramatically reduce Inbox clutter.

Spam Blocking

The university email servers will not relay email from known hosts that send spam; more information can be found here. http://www.oulu.fi/tietohallinto/ohjeet/mail/spam-block.html

SpamAssassin Setup:

You will need your currently active Paju/Koivu user ID and password. Have you forgotten your username? You can find it through the search at http://www.oulu.fi/haku/index.html Enter your name in the middle field called "Henkilökunnan ja opiskelijoiden sähköpostihaku".

Step 1

Kone - Server "Select which server to install SpamAssassin"

Käyttäjätunnus - User ID
Salasana - password

caption: "Fill in the required fields and click enter (Sisään)."

Step 2

Click Set (Aseta), and check the box next to update list of known spam (kopioi valmiit roskapostitunni steet itselle).

IT services suggests updating this list periodically to reduce unwanted spam. This list needs to be manually updated by you.

Step 3

Spam filtering has been set

you can return (Takaisin) or quit (Lopetus)

Step 4

If SpamAssassin was previously installed, you will see this page.

(Poista) - Remove SpamAssassin and personal spam settings

(Päivitä) - Update SpamAssassin Settings (Päivitä roskapostisuodattimen asetuksia). The changes you've made will be stored in your .recipes file. (Omat muutokset säilyvät .recipes - tiedostossa!) Check Box - update list of known spam (Kopioi valmiit roskapostitunnisteet itselle.)

(Lopetus) - Quit/Close

SpamAssassin has created a folder in your Web Mail and Pine folders.

SpamAssassin appends this heading to any message it flags as spam.

“Spam detection software, running on the system "sun3.oulu.fi", has identified this incoming email as possible spam. The original message has been attached to this so you can view it (if it isn't spam) or block similar future email."

Managing the spam_assassin folder in Web mail:

Messages flagged as spam will now accumulate within the spam_assassin folder. Periodically check this folder for messages that may have been incorrectly marked as spam and save INBOX/home directory disk space by emptying spam_assassin folder.

From the drop down menu in the top right corner select the spam_assassin folder

To save important messages that may have found their way into spam_assassin folder:
check the box next to each message you want to keep
then select which folder from the 'messages to' field
click move

To delete the remaining spam messages:
select 'empty spam' button from the menu bar
