Research focus of KSI is ”Operational Excellence of Micro Enterprises”. Our research aims are 1) to develop micro, small and medium-sized enterprises; 2) to investigate production engineering; and 3) to provide scientific knowledge and to promote new innovations and rapid experimentations in order to develop the operational excellence of enterprises. Impact in society and regional development are important for KSI research.

The research is mainly based on infrastructure located outside the main campus of University of Oulu: ELME Studio in Nivala (engineering works innovations), CallioLab in Pyhäjärvi (underground research infrastructure) and LivingLab of Micro Enterprises (Northern Finland). KSI is actively developing these infrastructures together with organizations in the region but also nationally.

KSI has succeeded in making remarkable increase in research activities conducted in its operational region. Furthermore, also notable international cooperation has been created in key research areas. The operation is most actively carried out in the following research and development groups:

Micro-Entrepreneurship Research

Micro-Entrepreneurship Research Group MicroENTRE was launched in 2011. The establishment of a new research group was based on a common view of the opportunities of micro-entrepreneurship research activity to generate high-level scientific research to support growth, development and vitality of the enterprises operating in the region. The research group acts in close cooperation with local enterprises, business development companies and intermediary organizations while it is also building national and international cooperation networks in the selected focus areas.

The key research themes of MicroENTRE are related to the development of the regional entrepreneurial climate, promoting enterprise growth, internationally oriented activities and financial and incentive systems, comprehending the business environment in northern sparsely populated areas and supporting research, development and innovation activity.


Future Manufacturing Technologies, FMT

The Future Manufacturing Research Group focuses on processing techniques and methods of plate type material. The specialist area is lightweight and hard structures. Research includes ultra-strength steel and their workability, short heat treatments in improving the characteristics of steel, and tailored small-series production of steels, as well as cost-effective production automation. Furthermore, the research focuses on mechanical strength of structures including impact of machining and different conditions, production technical planning and prototyping as well as fastener and tool technology.

Majority of the researchers work in ELME Studio in Nivala. The research group offers services for companies and other organizations.


Underground physics research group, CUPP

The laboratory of CUPP is located in the CallioLab ( which is Centre for Underground Research and Innovation in Pyhäjärvi, Finland. The group has implemented a range of scientific experiments together with a broad international cooperation network since 2001.

During the past years the EMMA-experiment (Expriment with MultiMuon Array) has been under construction in the laboratory. The experiment is conducted as cooperation between the Universities of Oulu and Jyväskylä, the St. Petersburg and Moscow Research Institutes within the authority of Russian Academy of Science, and with the University of Aarhus, Denmark.

Another on-going experiment is measurement of the carbon-14 isotope proportion in a liquid scintillator. The experiment demands extremely low background radiation and it is located on the bottom of the mine approximately at a depth of 1,400 metres (4593 ft) at CallioLab Lab2. The experiment is conducted as cooperation between the Universities of Oulu and Jyväskylä as well as the Russian Academy of Science.


RFMedia Laboratory

RFMedia Laboratory is a joint research community of the University of Oulu and the Centria University of Applied Sciences. The research focuses on digitalization, and wireless communication technology-based systems and the exploitation of these technologies as business enablers. The current research focus is on industrial Internet-of-Things (IoT) solutions, especially the utilization of data analytics and Big Data as a source for Business Excellence.
