General Information about The Department of Educational Sciences and Teacher Education

Educational Programmes and Student Enrollment

The Department of Educational Sciences and Teacher Education has approximately 1300 lower or higher academic degree or postgraduate degree seeking students. Annual enrollment figures of students, categorized by different programmes are as follows:

Educational Science 30
Primary Teacher Education 20
Arts and Craft Oriented Primary Teacher Education 20
Master of Education, International Teacher Education 20
Technology Oriented Primary Teacher Education 20
Early Childhood Education 20
Music Education 18

Master's Degree Programme in Education and Globalisation is a two-year international programme. Annual enrollment is 20 students.

In addition, approximately 150 students from outside the Department, are taken in annually to complete studies in pedagogics.

Staff Information

The Department has approximately 130 staff members of which 17 are professors, 9 senior assistants, 11 assistants, 31 lecturers and 14 other teaching staff. There are also app. 20 researchers.

The Teacher Training School of Oulu has a staff of app. 100.

The entire Faculty of Education consists of app. 350, including the Department of Teacher Education in Kajaani and the Teacher Training Schools both in Oulu and Kajaani.

The Department's main policy theme is Education in the Globalizing World – A Northern Perspective. It consists of three main research areas:

  2. Learning, Teaching, and Questions of Growth and Development
  3. Education, Citizenship, and Environmental Questions in the Changing Society
