Is the Master's degree programme available through distance education or correspondence?
The Master's degree programme is a full-time programme gaining much of its value through the dialogue between teachers and students. Experts from different areas of society as well as visiting lecturers from other universities contribute to this exchange of ideas. At this stage we are unable to offer the programme as it is intended through distance education or correspondence.
Is the programme available as part-time studies?
The programme is designed as a full-time programme. The workload for the two years is 120 ECTS credits (1ECTS corresponds approximately 27h of work). The first year is rather intensive with the majority of study modules offered at that time. Also, research groups begin functioning in the autumn of the first year. During the second year of studies subsidiary (minor) studies and the Master's thesis are undertaken by students. In some cases part-time studies may be possible during the second year (e.g. the student has completed subsidiary studies in an Open University before applying to the programme).
Does the University of Oulu provide scholarships to foreign students?
Please see the university websites on tuition fees and scholarships.
The application deadline has passed. Can I still apply to the programme?
Applications that arrive after the deadline will not be considered. This also applies to cases where the application has arrived late because of a third party (e.g. the mail has been delayed and the application has not arrived on time).
Is there a continuous selection of students to the programme?
The student selection process is described in detail on the website. Applicants are not admitted to the programme outside the student selection process.
I will graduate and have my Bachelor's level degree after the application deadline but before the studies begin. Does this affect my eligibility to apply to the programme?
An applicant who does not have a Bachelor's degree by the application deadline can apply if he/she will complete his/her Bachelor's degree by July 31. An applicant must attach an officially certified copy of his/her Bachelor's degree certificate or an official certificate stating projected completion date.
Can I apply online to the programme?
The electronic online application for the next application round will be accessible in November 2011. See details on the 'Admissions' page. Please follow the instructions given on the online application carefully. After completing the online application, it needs to be printed, signed and sent together with the necessary attachments to the address: University Admissions Finland, Yliopistonkatu 2, FI-00170 Helsinki, Finland. Please note that the application documents must be sent to the University Admissions address (not to the University of Oulu).
Applications sent via email or fax are not considered.
What are certified copies?
This refers to authentication of certificates (degree diplomas etc.). All copies sent by an applicant must be officially certified (legalised), i.e. they must bear the stamp and signature of an official entitled to attest documents: an authorised school or university official, a notary public, a commissioner of oaths etc. The University of Oulu does not attest any documents or photocopies
How is the degree recognised?
The Ministry of Education's Decree on Master's Degree Programmes 1332/2007 recognises the Master's Degree Programme in Education and Globalisation. According to the Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004 the University of Oulu is responsible for the provision of MA (Education) degrees. Therefore the students are awarded an MA (Education) degree after successful completion of the programme. The degree also gives the students the possibility to continue for doctoral studies.
The degree does not provide students with teacher's qualification.
