Programme outline

Total: min. 120 ECTS credits
Language, Communication and Orientation Studies (5 ECTS)
Students with mother tongue other than Finnish:
- Orientation to the Finnish culture and educational system (3 ECTS)
- Introduction to the Finnish language (2 ECTS)

Students with Finnish as their mother tongue:
- Orientation to the Finnish culture and educational system (3 ECTS)
- Language studies (2 ECTS) (depending on previous studies):
- - Second official language, Swedish or
- - Other language studies

Advanced Studies in Educational Sciences (80 ECTS)
  • Issues in globalisation (5 ECTS)
  • Ethics and education (5 ECTS)
  • Nordic education in the European and global context (5 ECTS)
  • New learning environments and technology (5 ECTS)
  • Educational policy, planning and leadership (5 ECTS)
  • Research methodology (10 ECTS)
  • Internship (5 ECTS)
  • Masters Thesis (40 ECTS)
Minor Subject Studies (35 ECTS)
  • Minor studies (25 ECTS) + Optional studies (10 ECTS) or
  • Studies in Education: minor subject 'Education in Transition' (25-35 ECTS)

    Students can select their minor subject on the basis of their previous studies, thesis topic or personal interest. Students with no background in Education must select 'Education in Transition' as their minor subject.

In addition to the lecturers from the Faculty of Education at the University of Oulu, there will be experts from various educational and other institutions, both from Finland and abroad, teaching in the programme. Studies offer students the latest research and professional knowledge in the area of education. Studies also include visits to different institutions in order to provide examples of good practice, and opportunities to combine theory and practice.

Spring 1st year:

  • New Learning Environments and Technology
  • Qualitative Research Methodology
  • Quantitative Research Methodology
  • Internship Seminar
  • Master's Thesis Seminar
  • Minor: Education for All

Autumn 2nd year:

  • Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership
  • Master's Thesis Seminar
  • Internship
  • Minor: The Economics of Educaton
  • Minor: Seminar in Education in Transition

Spring 2nd year:

  • Master's Thesis Seminar
  • (Internship)

The internship can be carried out either during the summer or during the second academic year. The Master’s thesis seminar will start in the spring term during the first year and continue throughout the second academic year.
