Department of Medical Microbiology organises an annual basic course in medical microbiology for medical and dentistry students. In addition Medical Microbiology arranges a course on infectious diseases in collaboration with the Department of Internal Medicine. Students from other faculties at the University of Oulu have also the possibility to attend the basic medical microbiology course.

The main areas of research are:

1. Molecular Analysis of Lymphocyte Development

2. Molecular Virology of Human Herpes Viruses

3. Chlamydia pneumoniae as a Cause of Diseases

4. KIAS-study; Cold, Infections and Asthma in military conscripts

5. CNS Infection in Puumala-virus Nephropathia epidemica.

There is also a diagnostic research and development unit at the department which provides diagnostic PCR-tests on virology and basic immunological laboratory analyses for clinicians.
