PEDEGO Research Unit includes medical specialties of Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Dermatology, Clinical Genetics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology. There are seven full-time Professors in the unit (two in Pediatrics, one in Gynecology, one in Pediatric Neurology, one in Dermatology, one in Otorhinolaryngology and one in Ophthalmology), 30% Professorship in Gynecologic Oncology, 30% Professorship in Child Psychiatry, 20% Professorship in Pediatric Surgery and 20% Professorship in Pediatrics (special responsibility of EBM teaching and research training). In addition, there are seven full-time clinical teachers (three in Pediatrics, two in Gynecology, one in Dermatology and in Ophthalmology), 70% clinical teacher in Child Psychiatry, 50% clinical teachers in Ophthalmology, 25% clinical teacher in Genetics teacher and 25% clinical teacher in Dermatology. In Otorhinolaryngology, there are three joint clinical teacher positions with the Oulu University Hospital (University share being about 60%).
PEDEGO Receives substantial amount of competitive research funding and employs numerous full-time researchers including, for example, one Academy Research Fellow and one Academy of Finland funded postdoctoral researcher. The most significant external funding is received for research related to prevention of type 1 diabetes, mechanisms of premature birth, pediatric infectious diseases, genetics and mechanisms of early-onset multiorgan diseases and dermatological diseases.
