2.2. HILMA course: Gender and Development, 5 op  
University of Helsinki, web-course through University network Hilma: The course offers an outline of debates about gender and gender equality in social sciences and Developments Studies. The historical shifts from Women and/in Development to Gender and Development will be studied. Major theoretical perspectives within Gender Studies and postcolonial feminist theory are made familiar through a study of texts. One thematic field (health, poverty, education, democracy) will be studied more thoroughly by each student through a case study project.  The course will run 18.3. – 13.5. 2013, 8 weeks in total. The Department of Process and Environmental Engineering (DPEE) is organizing a course titled Sustainable Development during November 10 – December 15, 2011 as part of the Barents Environmental Engineering (BEE) international Master’s degree programme. The DPEE arranges the course in collaboration with NorTech Oulu, the Thule Institute and the Sociology, Women Studies and Environmental Education unit.

Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies (5 ECTS) 10.10.-9.12. 2011

The course is organized by the Universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä and Hilma Network of Gender Studies and aimed at the exchange students of gender studies in Universities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Lappi, Oulu, Tampere, Turku and Åbo Akademi. During the course, the students will learn some important themes of Women’s and Gender Studies with a specific Finnish perspective.

Time for applications is 5.- 23.9.2011

February 12, 2010 - Teaching with Gender, Athena book series

Athena (Advanced Thematic Network in European Women's Studies) has published 7 publications in a series titled "Teaching with Gender". The included publications are Teaching Intersectionality,
Teaching Gender in Social Work, Teaching Gender, Diversity and Urban Space, Teaching Subjectivity, Teaching With the Third Wave, Teaching Visual Culture, and Teaching Empires. All the publications are available online.

November 25 2009 - 16 days of activism against gender violence and candle campaign
The 25th of November is the international day against violence against women. This day also starts the 16 days campaign against gender violece. A candel event will be held at the University of Oulu (square in front of the main library/ Faculty of Humanities) at 15 o'clock to commemorate the victims of gender violence.

September 22 2009 - NWS-course: Sexualised and gendered violence as an issue of human rights and equalty - Northern, European and Global Perspectives.
The course will compensate NWS course "Power and violence in Eucational environments" (417312P, 3 cr). Recuirements for 3 cr are active participation during visiting lectures (6.10., 13.10., 14.10. and 16.10.) and an essay based on lectures and litterature.

Women's and Gender Studies in the University of Oulu will host several international researchers and experts in the field of violence and non-violence during fall 2009. The visits form and international lecture sseries Gender in Equality and Inequality which will also celebrate the 20 years of Women's Studies in the University of Oulu

HILMA network offers a course entitled "Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies", 5 ects, 19th Oct-11th Dec 2009. Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies centres around three themes: the concept of gender, gender equlity, and (gendered) power. The course is specifically targeted to exchange students.
