Space physics studies the various effects of energy and plasma originating from the Sun. The subfields of ionospheric, magnetospheric, and heliospheric physics are defined by their region of interest as a distance from Earth. The research - which includes auroras - is based on experimental data both from ground (magnetometers, optical instruments and the EISCAT radar) and from Earth orbiting satellites.
