Background

Peatlands are a unique feature of the boreal landscape. They differ in ecological functions due to differences in their development and also respond differently to management and climate change. Drainage for agriculture, forestry and peat harvesting has been carried out for a long time. This has negative impacts on the environment such as loss of biodiversity, increased greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient leaching and hydrological changes. On some cultivated areas the land has been abandoned due to e.g. poor drainage or reduced yield. We need more knowledge about how these areas should be managed . or restored in order to reduce the environmental impact on water courses and climate. Also, more knowledge is needed about the basic processes resulting in GHG emissions including hydrological and biogeochemical processes as well as modeling.
Keynote speakers
The key note lectures will provide a wide range of expertise within peatland and environment research.
Dr. JJH Jan van den Akker – Alterra, the Netherlands - Peat soil management and conservation
Dr. Martin Evans – University of Manchester, UK - Peatland hydrology and erosion processes
Ass. Prof. Dr. Rudolf de Groot - Environmental Systems Analysis group, Wageningen UR - the Netherlands - Socio-economic aspects of peatland values under different management regimes
Adj. Prof. Dr. Marja Maljanen – University of Kuopio – Finland – Greenhouse gas emissions from Nordic peat soils: present status and knowledge gaps
Target group
The conference is intended for scientists working with drained and managed peatlands. It will bring together experts on governing processes in peat soils related to soil physics, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and microbiology. Results on environmental impacts of drainage and methods for restoration will be presented.
