The Department of Process and Environmental Engineering is a research and educational unit of 900 students and 180 employees, operating at most of the focus areas of the University of Oulu.

The specific strong area of the department is its teaching which is based on unit process thinking and on firm know-how in natural sciences.
 

As an acknowledgement for its persistent, long-term development work in teaching, the Department of Process and Environmental Engineering has been awarded, by the Ministry of Education, the status of National Centre of Excellence in University Education for years 2004-2006, 2007-2009 and 2010-2012.
