2. Seismological research

2.1 Seismological observation

Northern Finland Seismological Network

The network of permanent seismic stations in Finland consists of 15 broadband (BB) and short-period (SP) stations. The Institute of Seismology of Helsinki University operates 12 stations located primary on the territory of southern Finland. Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory of Oulu University operates three permanent broadband seismic stations located in the northern part of Finland. The stations form the real-time Northern Finland Seismological Network (FN). The main target is recording, analysis and archiving of seismological data for earthquake research. The network was established in 2005, after Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory modernized its own short-period seismic stations.

At the moment stations are equipped with Streckeisen STS-2 VBB (very broadband) seismometers, Earth Data PS-2400 24-bit digitizers and Linux PC with SeisComP (Seismological Communication Processor) software developed at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (Germany). The stations are connected to the data center at Oulu via Internet. Data acquisition, recording, archiving, control and transfer of the data from stations to the data server at Oulu is made using SeedLink protocol. Since 2006 the Northern Finland Seismological Network is a part of GEOFON Extended Virtual Network.

Data

All the stations are registering three-component (Z, N, E) continuous data at sampling rate of 100 sps.
From this data the following continous datastreams are stored in miniSEED format:

HH* 100 sps
BH* 20 sps
LH* 1 sps
VH* 0.1 sps
