University of Oulu
The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland with an exceptionally wide scientific base. It is an active scientific learning and research community for 15 830 students and 3100 staff members, whose task is to promote well-being and education in Northern Finland by implementing high-quality international research. The University’s six faculties and their departments form a multidisciplinary academic institution that enables diversified studies and multifaceted research.
At the University, research is conducted in over 70 fields of science. Internationally pioneering research is conducted as a collaboration of different disciplines. The fields of information technology, biotechnology, northern and environmental issues have been defined as special research focus areas. The University cooperates closely with industry and commerce, and has broad connections with hundreds of international research and educational institutions.
Most of the University’s activities are located on the main campus of Linnanmaa. Linnanmaa is also the home of Technopolis, the largest technology centre in Finland, VTT State Technical Research Centre, a student village, and numerous services. Faculty of Medicine and Biocenter Oulu, as well as Oulu University Hospital and Medipolis Centre at Kontinkangas create a high-level research environment for medicine and biotechnology.
International Strategy of The University of Oulu
The University recently compiled an International Strategy and Action Plan for years 2005-2010. In research, the goals are to be an active participant in international research and innovation, and to ensure that publication policies and research collaboration ensure that results have maximum impact internationally. A part of this goal is to actively recruit high-level foreign academics. Support services are also developed to meet the needs of our international staff.
