I am a student of Finnish language at the Faculty of Humanities. Currently I am writing my Master’s thesis and finishing my studies. As my graduation is approaching, I can say I am extremely proud to become an alumna of the University of Oulu.
When I started my studies, my professor told me that I could become anything I want. Such a statement was hard to believe in my freshman year but I am amazed of just how far I have already come.
During my time at the University of Oulu, I have studied in three different faculties, I have learned from the best researchers and pedagogues within my field of study and I have even spent a year on exchange in the U.S. as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant. Thanks to everything I have learned, I have already started working as a Finnish language professional and gained teaching experience in both the University of Oulu and the Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
I am grateful of the excellent education I have received but also of the great times I have spent with friends and peers. For me, the highlights of my student life have been times spent in student organizations. I was actively involved in my student guild for three years. During that time I made amazing friends and took part in memorable events and excursions.
Making a difference
After my year abroad, I was also selected to the Board of the Student Union (OYY). Dealing with academic and international affairs in OYY, I felt that I could truly make a difference and that students were heard in all levels of decision making. Now I am a member of the Executive Board at the Faculty of Humanities where I can make an impact in the future of my Faculty.
I can honestly say that the University of Oulu is a great place for students who are ambitious, hard-working and fun-loving like me. Also, I cannot imagine a better place to live in Finland than my home town Oulu. Nothing beats a place full of fun, young people where you get the benefits of both living in a city and of enjoying nature and the Northern atmosphere.
