The Board of the University of Oulu decided in its meeting 15 June 2016 on implementing the degree program renewal for the student selection of 2017. In the renewal, all education leading to a degree will be collected in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs. Bachelor’s programs will be grouped into wider-ranging wholes, taking into account the profiling of the University, objectives for degrees and qualifications agreed with the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the application pressure.
”The new Bachelor’s programs are shared between several disciplines. The student first gets a basic ability to widely understand the disciplines in the program as basis for their major subject studies in the Master’s phase. Their orientation takes place during studies, which makes different study paths possible. Wide-ranging degree programs also make it easier to answer the changing needs of working life”, says Vice Rector for Education Helka-Liisa Hentilä.
At the moment the University of Oulu has 44 Bachelor’s programs and 56 Master’s programs, of which 18 are foreign language degree programs. In the student selection of 2017, there are 22 wide-ranging Bachelor’s programs, 35 Master’s programs, and 21 Doctoral degree programs. The 18 foreign programs are mainly integrated as orientation options in Finnish programs. The Board also approved the number of study places in the degree programs.
”The renewal of degree programs is a key part of the new strategy of the University of Oulu. We aim to make the new degree programs better than before, and this renewal also makes it possible to better manage and develop the entirety”, says Rector Jouko Niinimäki.
Tuition fees for new students from outside EU and EEA
Starting from 1 August 2017, universities must start collecting tuition fees from students coming from outside the EU and the EEA to study in programs in a foreign language. The tuition fees per year in the degree programs in the University of Oulu will be graded in three categories based on the costs of the education: 10,000 euros, 12,000 euros, and 13,000 euros. A scholarship system will simultaneously be started.
