I am Aino-Kaisa and I am finishing my studies in Industrial Engineering and Management. I am originally from Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland. The multidisciplinary University of Oulu was the main reason for me to move from Southern Finland to Northern Finland. During these years, I have really studied a lot of different subjects in five faculties. I have studied mechanical engineering, civil engineering, business, languages and politics. Besides that, I have been very active in student organisations and the decision making bodies during these years.
The University of Oulu welcomed me warmly into the university. Soon I noticed that I was a board member in a student guild and a student representative in different decision making bodies. Because I really liked to make a difference, I also applied the board of the Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) and that was the best year of my student life. I learned so much more than I could have ever learned had I only attended lessons/lectures/courses. Last year I was a board member in the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and I was promoting student affairs at the national level in Helsinki. Finland has probably the most active students in the world if we look at the engagement in student organisations. I think that if you’re interested, you can also find an organisation or a club in order to make a difference or arrange interesting activities in Oulu, both inside or outside the University. Outside the University, I have also been active in the human rights organisation Amnesty International’s local group in Oulu.
I have found Oulu a good city to study and live in. For example, the facilities for group work at University are excellent. The housing is reasonably priced and it is easy to cycle to different places even during winter. There are also good opportunities for sport activities for students. In this year I started bouldering (climbing without ropes) at Toppila. My favourite cultural activity in Oulu is attending the Oulu Music Video Festival (OMVF) in August. OMVF will be a must-see event even if I ever leave Oulu after graduation.
