The University of Oulu is ranked among the best universities in the world in six sciences in the new QS World University Rankings by Subject. The new subject of the University of Oulu on the QS ranking list is electrical and electronic engineering, which was ranked at 301–350.
Changes to last year’s QS Rankings are small. Geography was again the top subject in the University of Oulu, at 101–150. Medicine is ranked at 201–250.
Other subjects in the University of Oulu on the ranking list were biological sciences (301-350), computer science and information systems (351–400), and, for the first time, agriculture and forestry (251–300).
The names for sciences which QS are using differ from the ones normally used in Finland. For example, their definition of biological sciences includes, among others, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, and molecular biology, but they classified most publications by biologists in agriculture and forestry.
QS take their ranking data from the Scopus database of the Elsevier publishing company, so the data in the calculations do not fully correspond to the faculty structure of the University of Oulu. The field of a publication is determined by how the journal is classified.
QS World University Rankings by Subject is a field-specific ranking, which weights bibliometrics and colleague evaluation differently depending on the field. In geography, the weight of colleague evaluation is large, 60 per cent.
There were 4438 universities and 46 sciences included in this year’s QS evaluations.
