From the Sun to the Earth:  Much more than light and heat
Andrés Muñoz-Jaramillo, SouthWest Research Institute, USA
Public seminar in space physics, Tellus Stage, 7.11.2017, 16:00-18:00

The Sun's magnetic field makes the Sun a dynamic and fascinating star to be around.   It gives structure to the solar atmosphere and lies at the core of the violent releases of energy responsible for space weather.  In this interactive talk we will introduce the Sun's magnetic field and the mechanisms that lead to the build up and release of magnetic energy.  Then we will discuss the different ways in which this energy is released and how it affects the solar system and Earth as the home of a technological society.  We will finalize with a quick look at the solar cycle, how it works, and how it changes the conditions in our solar system during the course of a decade.

Be sure to bring your laptop to play with an interactive visualization and get ready to do your own simulation of the solar magnetic field using silly putty!
