A total of 3227 applications were received for international master's programmes at the University of Oulu in the application period that ended on 24 January 2018. The record number of applicants is more than twice that of last year's 1414 applicants. The growth in the number of applicants was 128 percent.
The most popular master's programmes are International Business Management (519 applicants), Computer Science and Engineering (384 applicants), Environmental Engineering (363 applicants), and Wireless Communications Engineering (323 applicants). The master's programmes were the same as a year ago, so the growth in the number of applicants is based on greater familiarity and appeal.
"Our high-quality degree programmes and our northern, innovative scientific community are of interest to increasing numbers of students in different parts of the world. Much work has been done to market the programmes and to serve the applicants well, and we are very pleased with this result. Good guidance identifies candidates that are best suited for the programmes already in the application phase, so instead of maximising the number, we aim at getting high-quality applications", says University of Oulu Communications and Marketing Director Marja Jokinen.
Applications for the master's programmes at the University of Oulu were submitted from around the world. As was the case in previous years, the greatest number of applicants were from Bangladesh and Pakistan. There was some growth with the USA and Great Britain as well. More detailed figures on individual countries will be ready later in the spring. About seven percent of the applicants are from EU an EEA countries and the rest are from outside these countries.
A year ago tuition fees were introduced at Finnish universities for students from outside the EU and EEA countries. At the University of Oulu, applicants have the possibility to apply for scholarships from the university's scholarship programme.
Student selections in the application period that concluded on 24 January 2018 will be published by early April, after which those who were selected must confirm if they will take the offered study spot.
It is still possible to apply for master's programmes beginning in the autumn of 2018 this spring, together with the general application period for bachelor's programmes and Finnish-language master's programmes from 14 to 28 March, 2018. No scholarship applications are accepted in this application round. Final statistics on applicants will be ready after the second application period.
