The University of Oulu's points were increased in the fields of teaching, research and international outlook, but fell slightly in citations and corporate funding. This year, nine Finnish universities appeared in the rankings. Like last year, the University of Oulu was fourth out of the nine Finnish universities.
The Times Higher Education Rankings of 2019 were again dominated by British and United States universities. The University of Oxford (GB) took the top spot, followed by the University of Cambridge (GB), Standford University (USA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).
Teaching, research, and citations are each allocated 30% of the overall THE ranking score. The international outlook score accounts for 7.5%, and industry income accounts for 2.5% of the overall score. The metrics that make up the teaching score include reputation survey, staff-to-student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio, doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio, and institutional income. The research score is made up from three metrics, of which, reputation survey has the highest weighting, followed by research income and research productivity.
