The PhD research is mainly funded by external projects and doctoral schools.
Most PhD’s include full-time salary or grants from foundations. All PhD candidates participate in undergraduate teaching and different university tasks.
In the unit the doctoral thesis supervision include that:
- PhD students are integrated to a research network in Oulu.
- Study plans are developed in early stage in research and they are followed up regularly.
- Research leads to scientific publications.
- The research is directly related to current environmental issues.

If you already have a Master's degree, it may be possible to continue your studies to a Ph.D. degree in Oulu. The University of Oulu Graduate School, UniOGS, heads all the doctoral studies.
