Violence prevention through the culture of compassion and non-violence is an educational course targeted to teachers in various educational institutions from universities to colleges and schools. The course increases professional knowledge on violence and non-violence in local communities and in the participants own environments, and support violence prevention through the development of culture and pedagogy of compassion and non-violence. The course is a collaboration between the University of Oulu, Finland and St Petersburg University of Culture and Arts, Russia.
After completing the course the participants will
•have the skills to identify violence in their environments, with sensitivity towards gender and other socio-cultural dimensions
•be familiar with central approaches in the philosophy of non-violence
•be able to reflect different components needed for the development of culture of non-violence, including arts and culture
•have conceptual and practical tools to develop culture and pedagogy of compassion and non-violence in their own environments
The course includes the topics of:
•Conceptualizing violence – gender responsible approach
•Philosophical approaches to non-violence
•Violence prevention, Compassion, and non-violence
•Arts as a means for a culture of non-violence
•Compassion and Non-violence in pedagogical theory and practice
Professional staff in Universities, colleges and other educational environments.
TIMEFRAME & WORKLOAD
September 30 – December 20 2013. Workload approximately 100 hours.
The course is realised as distance education in Optima e-learning environment. Course includes individual reading, discussions, and individual / group activities. Participants reflect their learning in a study journal.
The course is studied in English.
Writen feedback and self-evaluation. After completing the course the participants will receive a certificate for the distance learning course from the University of Oulu and a certificate of the Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts
