Asthma and allergies are common diseases. Climate change has marked influence on environmental conditions, e.g. affects pollen, and may have profound effects on asthma and allergies. The Influence of Air Pollution, Pollen, and Ambient Temperature on Asthma and Allergies in Changing Climate (APTA) is a research project where both short-term and long-term effects of environmental exposures are assessed related to changing climate on asthma, allergies and mortality in two population-based studies: The Espoo Cohort Study and The Finnish Environment and Asthma Study.
The focus is on health effects of air pollution, allergenic pollen and extreme climatic factors in vulnerable populations. We apply innovatively complementary research methodologies, including new modeling approaches for air pollution and pollen, statistical environmental and information technologies, genetics, clinical medicine and epidemiology.
