Material Culture and Human-Environment Relations in Early Modern Tornio

Project description

The project studies how urban development and the gradual emergence of the "modern" world influenced human-environment relations in the Swedish town of Tornio (founded in 1621) in the 17th and 18th century. In particular, the project studies how material culture maintained "traditional" pre-urban ways of life and cosmological concepts, and how material culture mediated changes in worldview and environmental relations. Based on historical archaeology, this research uses traditional and innovative approaches to describe, analyse and interpret the dynamics between people, material culture and the lived-in world.
