Inland and Coastal Areas in Northern Finland in the Light of Discoveries and Sites from the Iron Age

Project description

Goal of the project called “Mutual Cooperation and Dependency as Social Phenomena: Inland and Coastal Areas in Northern Finland in the Light of Discoveries and Sites from the Iron Age” was to study cooperation and mutual dependence of communities in northern Finland as a social phenomenon. Archaeological materials from the late Iron Age from Northern Finland were used. The dependence and cooperation processes were studied by comparing coastal and inland communities to each other, particularly in terms of exchange networks, since it is possible – and easiest – to reconstruct social structures based on mutual dependence and cooperation through exchange networks.

The plan was to update the research on the late Iron Age in Northern Finland. The traditional impression is that there were no fixed settlements in Northern Finland in the late Iron Age. This opinion has been justified by the lack of fixed antiquities from the late Iron Age in Northern Finland. However, field work completed in 2011 and 2013 unequivocally proved this impression incorrect. Antiquities from the late Iron Age were found in Siikajoki, Ii and Utajärvi in 2011–2013. These demand a reassessment of the area’s settlement history. The project is linked to the Swedish project Recalling the Past, which focuses on the cultural history of Northern Finland from the middle Iron Age to the present. The research border of Recalling the Past follows the Tornionjoki river, which means that the project was a natural continuation of this project. The project included cooperation with Swedish colleagues.
