Looking back at the previous term 2012-2013, the OBS mentoring programme was the most extensive initiative to connect students with company representatives. Mentoring was also a refreshing change to normal day routines for the staff! In addition to the 27 mentors – some already familiar from previous years’ mentoring programmes – and 35 participating students, staff and faculty from the Dean and Vice Dean to programme coordinators and various university services were involved.
Our students clearly saw huge benefits in the chance to get to know alumni and other business professionals as well as discuss career choices and transition from studies to working life. As one student put it: “I am now able to understand the employer perspective better.” Mentoring covered all Master’s programmes, including the Full-time MBA, so the programme was also a great opportunity for our students to get to know each other better.
The whole group met altogether three times over the course of the programme for group discussions and coffee. The aim of the joint meetings was to provide possibilities for participants to interact with each other, and give some food for thought, for example about the role of personality in finding employment. Several mentors thought that mentoring gave them fresh new outlooks – “It has been inspiring to meet and discuss with young and smart students.”
We are excited to start with a new batch of students next Autumn!
