Lauri Eklund

Formation of blood vessels is an essential biological process that controls embryonic development. Altered functions of the vasculature are involved in many common human diseases such as growth of malignant tumors and cardiac disorders, and mutations in genes important for blood vessel morphogenesis can cause life-threatening vascular anomalies. Dr Eklund’s research is focused on mechanisms how vascular endothelial cells interact with the underlying extracellular matrix, and better understanding of pathological mechanisms in vascular anomalies. He represents junior group leaders which will have a possibility to consolidate their independent lines of work through the CoE. Eklund holds the highly competitive Academy of Finland 5-year senior fellow positions for years 2010 – 2015.
