DPPH is a multidisciplinary postgraduate school, involving the Universities of Eastern Finland, Helsinki, Oulu and Tampere, The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the Finnish Cancer Registry and the UKK Institute.

Each year several postgraduate courses covering different fields of public health are arranged. These are held in Helsinki and in Tampere. The courses do not form a consistent 4-year program of postgraduate coursework, but students are free to choose courses and to combine them in consultation with their supervisors, into a program of study that best suits them. The training is provided by leading Finnish and international scholars in their respective fields.

The school has over 200 postgraduate students, 24 of whom receive a salary. All students, salaried or otherwise, are entitled to take part in all courses and to apply for the travel grants awarded by the school.
