Clean room facility and equipment of the Center of Microscopy and Nanotechnology are widely used in the research conducted at the University of Oulu. Vast amount of research groups and variety of research topics describe well the multidisciplinary nature of the CMNT. The personnel of the CMNT works closely with tens of research groups working with topics ranging from medicine to metallurgy and information technology. Groups utilizing the services of the CMNT are working under the following faculties of the University:

- Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine
- Faculty of Medicine
The CMNT collaborates with several Finnish and foreign universities and research institutes and also participates in the work of many research associations. The most important partners are Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OUAS), Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT), Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), and Geological Survey of Finland (GTK).
Besides academic research conducted in the universities and research institutes, the CMNT works also closely with several companies. Dozens of companies ranging from small and medium size enterprises to large multinational companies utilize the services of the CMNT in their operations.
